Accidents aboard USS ENTERPRISE:
| Date | Where | Events |
|---|---|---|
| February 9, 1963 | Atlantic | In the mid-Atlantic a wave washes over the #1 elevator on the ENTERPRISE while the elevator is in the down position. Four men are washed overboard. Two are rescued but one later dies. |
| February 20, 1963 | Atlantic | An aircraft crash aboard USS ENTERPRISE sweeps the carrier's deck with fire, killing two. |
| January 14, 1969 | 70 nautical miles off Honolulu, HI. |
On its way to the coast of Vietnam the carrier conducted flight operations. During the arming of an F-4 Phantom one of the aircraft's Zuni missiles detonated. The fire was spreading to other armed planes and some of their bombs and missiles detonated, too.ENTERPRISE turned into the wind to keep the flames away from the isle. One hour later the fire on the flight deck was under control but there were still fires inside the ship which were finally extinguished some hours later. During the eight explosions and the following fires aboard USS ENTERPRISE, 27 crewmen were killed and approx. 120 others were injured (other sources: 24 dead men and 85 injured people). The carrier was heavily damaged and in the flight deck there were three holes (one of them through two decks). 15 aircraft were destroyed or damaged. |
| July 27, 1974 | off California | USS ENTERPRISE suffers a fire in an electrical maintenance area off California. No reported injuries. |
| October 29, 1975 | While aboard the USS ENTERPRISE the engine of an F-14 ("NJ 453") of VF-124 started burning and destroyed the plane. | |
| December 19, 1976 | South China Sea | An F-14 ("NK 213") of VF-2 misses a landing on the USS ENTERPRISE and its wingtip strikes two other aircraft on the flight deck before it veers out of control and crashes into the South China Sea. |
| June 21, 1979 | Puget Sound Naval Shipyard, Wash. | USS ENTERPRISE, under overhaul at the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard, Wash., sustains a two-hour Class Alpha fire in a catapult room, machine shop, and passageway. |
| April 28, 1983 | off San Francisco, Calif. | USS ENTERPRISE runs aground within sight of the port of San Francisco after eight months at sea. It is stranded for five hours until the tide and tugs pull it free. |
| November 2, 1985 | Bishop's Rock, about 100 miles west of San Diego, Calif. | USS ENTERPRISE is grounded on Bishop's Rock. Reports say the ENTERPRISE sustains a 60-foot gash in the outer hull and damages one propeller. The carrier continues planned operations, taking part in ReadiEx 86-1 exercise before going into drydock on November 27. |
| December 11, 1997 | Atlantic | A McDonnell Douglas T-45A trainer ("Goshawk") splashed into the Atlantic shortly after take-off. |
| November 8, 1998 | Atlantic | During night landing re-qualifications aboard ENTERPRISE in the Atlantic, two jets collided. An EA6-B Prowler from VAQ-130 based at Whidbey Island collided with an S-3 Viking from VS-22 (Zappers) based at Jacksonville, Fla. The S-3 was sitting on the flight deck, the Prowler then fell into the sea. The S-3 had just landed and was in the Prowler's path. The LSO's declared a Fouled Deck but the Prowler clipped the Viking as it attempted to go around. All six crew, four from the Prowler and two from the Viking ejected. The two from the S-3 were injured one landing into a radar on the ship's island, the other into the sea. The four crew of the Prowler were killed, one body was found the other three missing presumed killed. The search was called off after 24 hours. The two survivors, suffering burns received treatment at Portsmouth Naval Medical Center. The body of Lt. j.g. Brenden J. Duffy, 27, of Annapolis Md., was recovered soon after the crash. Those missing presumed dead were Lt. j.g. Charles E. Woodward, 26, of Herndon Va., Lt. j.g. Ya, he keeps teasing me and he has so many other things to do, go figure! For the last say, 4 months the weather here has been like this, cold, rainy but cold which is freezy, snow, more snow, and ahhhhh snow! So far the kids have had the limit of snow days, and they arn't pleasent confined to the house, believe me! Add that to the fact that I'm married to someone who thinks that snow is pure evil, meant to annoy him, it's been an experience. Let me add that I LOVE snow, it's beautiful. It looks magical and pure and lovely. And silent, well silent outside. Outside is where Jim is not. From the first flake of the season to the last melt, we, as a family hear of the wonders of any state that is snow free. It happens every winter, it's expected.....
Last night, the weather guy was not happy either..... You all know that they revel in nasty weather! The nastier the better. Tornadoes... yipee! We were told that today would be warm. Oh no! Well for Ohio warm in March, is maybe 40.... They can't even give us a decent wind chill factor for 40.... No he said, it will be 68! 68!!!!! Yep, 68... He told us that was indeed unseasonable and could produce thunderstorms or the dreaded tornado! He seemed happy about that..... So it was wonderful today, I worked in the yard, took a walk, even found a lost newspaper that had been plowed up months ago.... It was nice......
I just heard that weatherman again.... he seemed releaved. Tomorrow the temp. will be 14.... whew.........
I just wish if God was gonna tease me, it would be something like waking up rich or mabey with thick hair...... Oh well
What sources do you count on for national news coverage? How about international and local news?
Jon Stewart and MSNBC...... The Cleveland Plain Dealer.....
Here are some pics of Dad's outhouse journey........he'll make ya one if you get old wood...... People going in and out of the driveway have mixes reactions.... The landscapers laugh and make crude comments... Hey Jim, ya building a shitter! People we know think it's cool (they too, want a fun garden shed) and the illeagels sometimes look a bit to longinly at it (we didn't put a hole in the seat for that very reason!)
